Spiritual arts

A sand mandala is a sacred Buddhist art form where monks meticulously construct intricate geometric patterns using millions of grains of colored sand. Acting as a tool for meditation and healing, the mandala is ritually destroyed upon completion to teach the impermanence of life.

Himalayan fashion

Himalayan fashion is a unique blend of centuries-old tradition, spirituality, and sustainability. Deeply intertwined with Bhutanese identity, it champions mindful, eco-friendly practices while taking center stage on global runways recently.

Besides the traditional, mostly religious music well-known in Bhutan, there are new developments of B-Pop (Bhutanese Pop) taking off among the youth. We recommend a visit to Choki Traditional Art School (CTAS) in Thimphu. CTAS is the only private institute in Bhutan that provides free education to underprivileged youth with a keen interest in learning traditional arts and crafts.

Textiles & the art of weaving

Visit the Chencho Handicraft & Weaving Center in the Paro Valley. They offer a captivating array of local handicrafts, with a strong emphasis on weavings, antique kiras, embroidery, and woolen carpets. Visitors can explore traditional Bhutanese hand weaving fabrics of excellent quality at this authentic store. The center is known for its beautiful textiles and provides an opportunity to witness the artistry of local crafts.

Green pigment painting

Penjor Dorji is a renowned Bhutanese traditional painter and founder of Green Pigment Arts, celebrated for his mission to revitalize Bhutan’s ancient practice of extracting and using natural, eco-friendly pigments from local flora, minerals, and soils

Paper making

The Tashi Gongphel Handmade Paper Factory is an artisanal workshop located in the Paro Valley, where you can observe the ancient, traditional craft of making Deh-sho (traditional handmade paper).

Phuba Mandala Studio

The Phuba Mandala Studio is a unique cultural hub in the Paro Valley. It offer a rare opportunity to learn the ancient art of constructing and dissolving traditional Tibetan sand mandalas.
