Spirituality

Spirituality

Spirituality is woven into every corner of Bhutan. From almost every viewpoint, you will be able to see one of the many monasteries or nunneries in the country. All families have small offering altars in their homes, and great importance is given to spiritual rituals to evoke the blessings of the deities (gods). Spend a few hours or days in the company of the men and women who live a life guided by compassion and awareness. You will leave not just with memories, but with a new perspective.

Visit, for example, the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery in Punakha Valley, where the stillness of the hillside, the towering statue of the Goddess of Compassion, and the voices of young nuns in prayer create an atmosphere of devotion

Dochula Pass, located at an elevation of 3,100 metres, is one of Bhutan’s most picturesque mountain passes, offering stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Situated between Thimphu and Punakha, this serene pass is decorated with 108 chortens (stupas), known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honour of Bhutanese soldiers. The pass is not only a place of breathtaking natural beauty but also a site of deep spiritual significance. On clear days, visitors can marvel at the majestic peaks of the Eastern Himalayas, making Dochula Pass a must-visit destination for those seeking tranquillity and a profound connection with Bhutan’s natural and cultural heritage.

Gangtey Monastery, also known as Gangtey Gonpa or Gangtey Monastery, is a monastery of the Nyingmapa School of Tibetan Buddhism, the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition, located in the Wangdue Phodrang District in central Bhutan. There is a central courtyard where a festival for the Black-Necked Crane takes place.

At the Dochula Pass or Chelela Pass, you can hang some colorful prayer flags to release aspirations into the mountain winds, followed by time for individual meditation, a serene practice of stillness amid the sacred Himalayan landscape.
